You bid me
All this time I've been looking at the wind and the waves (which are furious, sure), but I should have had my eyes on Jesus Christ. God perhaps put in my mind the beginning of a poem called "You bid me," which relates to the story of Peter walking on water. I tried to finish it the best I could.
Matthew 14:28-31
28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
You bid me
I wouldn't have come this far had you not bid me
I wouldn't have these scars had you not healed me
I'm so far from everything I've ever known
and I've done it because you bid me
All my life, I've seen the wind and the waves
they roar, they toss me about
but you comfort me; your words echo in my soul
you call to me, "Come, son."
I will follow you wherever you go
no matter how difficult or how I falter
I will fall many times, but you always pick me up
I will break and leak out, but you fill me up
I am not Peter, but I am your disciple
I am not even a good Christian, but I try
there is no goal but obedience
success is simply defined as faithfulness
What you're asking isn't hard
but it shakes me to my core
I've emptied out myself to serve you
left everything I wanted to walk with you
You bid me walk to you
but I just saw the waves and the wind
you bid me walk to you
and almost there, I fell through
You were always the reason
some may say it was something else
but it was always you I was after
it was always you I clung to
The most precious things in my life
have been taken from me
all but one, and that is you —
the one thing I cannot live without
Thank you for drawing me out of so many dark waters
thank you for lifting me to your side
thank you for calming the wind and waves
and for the knowledge I never would have come this far
had you not bid me.
