Hey Jealousy
I should have known when I liked Hey Jealousy by the Gin Blossoms in high school it had a wickedly sad backstory. You can read some of that here, if you'd like (it involves alcoholism, just as the term gin blossoms also refers to alcoholism, oh, and suicide). Instead of delving into that, like I did a few years ago, let's just post the lyrics and say something like, "This is how I feel about a particular girl and the intervening years wasted without her." There, long post is now short. And then here are the lyrics. (Yeah, this is another unscheduled post. Can't plan everything, right?)
Permit me a moment of nostalgia. I don't do this often (ha). But wasn't the music in the 90s a lot richer and varied? Maybe I just had a lot more time on my hands. The music industry, though never perfect, seemed a lot healthier then. But that was before Napster and all of that. Still, the 2000s (or, if you prefer, aughts) was like a polar opposite with the packaged bubblegum pop that all sounded the same. And don't even get me started on the crap that passes for music now. Maybe that's why my tastes changed from alternative and hardcore to country, where songs still sound kind of like songs. Yeah, I'm old. I rant a lot these days. Get used to it. But I like stories. And I recall snowboarding and listening to punk and grunge and alternative radio (and wore some pretty dank thrift store bajas and tattered flannel). It was a natural thing to do in the 90s. I don't know what the music on the radio these days makes anyone want to do. Maybe jump off a cliff.
Embedded in this happy-sounding alternative pop song is the sad story of a boy who lost a girl because he had a weakness. I can relate. If anyone out there is in the same position, figure out your situation and get the girl. You won't regret it. And you'll save yourself a whole lot of feeling sorry for yourself. Win-win. Don't ask me what to do if you don't get the girl. Still trying to figure that out. Just write sad songs, I guess.

Well, tell me do you think it'd be all right
If I could just crash here tonight?
You can see I'm in no shape for driving
And anyway, I've got no place to go
If I could just crash here tonight?
You can see I'm in no shape for driving
And anyway, I've got no place to go
And you know it might not be that bad
You were the best I'd ever had
If I hadn't blown the whole thing years ago
I might not be alone
You were the best I'd ever had
If I hadn't blown the whole thing years ago
I might not be alone
Tomorrow we can drive around this town
And let the cops chase us around
The past is gone, but something might be found
To take its place
And let the cops chase us around
The past is gone, but something might be found
To take its place
Hey jealousy X4
And you can trust me not to think
And not to sleep around
And if you don't expect too much from me
You might not be let down
And not to sleep around
And if you don't expect too much from me
You might not be let down
'Cause all I really want is to be with you
Feeling like I matter too
If I hadn't blown the whole thing years ago
I might be here with you
Feeling like I matter too
If I hadn't blown the whole thing years ago
I might be here with you
Tomorrow we can drive around this town
And let the cops chase us around
The past is gone, but something might be found
To take its place
Hey jealousy
And let the cops chase us around
The past is gone, but something might be found
To take its place
Hey jealousy
Tomorrow we can drive around this town
And let the cops chase us around
The past is gone, but something might be found
To take its place
And let the cops chase us around
The past is gone, but something might be found
To take its place
Hey jealousy X4
Well, tell me, do you think it'd be all right
If I could just crash here tonight?
You can see I'm in no shape for driving

If I could just crash here tonight?
You can see I'm in no shape for driving

To take its place
And let the cops chase us around
The past is gone, but something might be found
To take its place
Hey jealousy
Hey jealousy
She took my heart
Well, there's only one thing I couldn't start
She took my heart
Well, there's only one thing I couldn't start
